CLAUDE DE LA COLOMBIERE AND THE PIERCED HEART

February 15, 2014

Dear Friends:

Today, on the liturgical remembrance of St. Claude de la Colombiere, allow me to share the following:

From St. Claude de la Colombiere, through Jean-Pierre de Causade and Pius XII (Haurietis Aquas, May 15, 1956), to Karl Rahner . . a long, awe-inspiring tradition of holy and wise theologians and mystics who have defined and shaped the contours of the spirituality of the Sacred Heart . . . an ineffable blessing . . . No one did it better in the 20th century than Karl Rahner . . . We are called to profess, with Pius XII and Rahner, that the spirituality of the Sacred Heart is not one among many, but THE spirituality that defines the heart of the Church, that defines the Church, . . .

It also defines our deepest humanity, The Hebrew words “leb” and “leb’eb” are used 858 times in the Hebrew Bible, At different levels of meaning, they define the fullness of the human person, our deepest reality. Within the pierced Heart of Jesus, I try to find my peace, to recover my sense of perspective, to beg for the grace to give my mind, soul and heart over into a paschal, vulnerable, and risky communion with the Crucified and Risen Jesus, whose heart was pierced to allow all of us who journey, tired, anxious, often anguished and uncertain, to enter and find healing and fullness, to find the home that will be ours for eternity.

Praying with the Jesuit tradition (the theologians and mystics of the Society of Jesus have been called, in a privileged way, to be the witnesses, doctors and mystics of the Sacred Heart), I pray today, and everyday, the short petition taught to me by another holy and wise Jesuit, Joseph Koterki,S.J., professor of philosophy at Fordham University : “Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like unto yours.”
